  • DVCAM NTSC to HDCAM transfer

    Hi,

The film festival wants to screen my film on HDCAM.

But the master exists on DVCAM [DV NTSC 4:3]

    1. How does the DV codec look once transferred to HDCAM?
    2. How much should it cost to transfer the 77 minute film?
    3. If I want to ‘uprez’ the entire film to HD, could I use one of the new software systems that are out there?

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Wayne,

I can’t answer all of your questions since we haven’t done this yet ourselves but I can say that you’ll have to uprez the film and I would get a company who has the Teranex boxes installed. You’ve spent all your hard earned money to create this film and you want to enter it into a film festival, I’d want the best quality uprez you can buy, it will make the difference for you. Teranex is in the business to create standards for HiDef video, so they are the standard for uprezzing.

Kona 2 and 3 both offer SD to HD up-convert in realtime so you can just play your DV timeline directly to HDCAM from your timeline.

I’m assuming you’re going to pillarbox the film since you say it’s in 4:3. This looks extremely clean using the Kona boxes.

If you want to go the Terranex route, it will probably cost between $300 – $1,500 to up-convert, not including the cost of the tape. You can contact CineFilm here in Atlanta. http://www.cinefilmlab.com

    Thanks Walter,

What kind of images can one expect after up-converting [either with Kona & Teranex]?

Does the image look really pixellated & soft?

    Thanks,

    Wayne
