bizarre video playback problem
Ok, this is an odd problem. I’m editing Flash footage rendered out of After Effects, and in FCP it breaks up in the viewer window. It generally plays back fine, but if I stop on some of the footage and step through it frame by frame it gets all distorted and freaky looking.
I just outputed on DVD studio pro and one of these gliches carried over. I looked at the quicktime. It plays back fine, but the quicktime also breaks up when i shuffle around it with my cursor or scroll backwards. Seems like a video card issue, or maybe ram?
If anyone has any thoughts on this, please let me know.
I’m using a G5 2.3 dual-core w/ 2 gigs of ram

Flash is a delivery format, not an editing format. This is the source of your issue. Why may I ask did you export Flash from AE if your were going to do additional editing?

i exported flash animations in a square pixel ratio, added effects in After effects, rendered them out in D1 aspect for FCP then to layoff to digibeta. i’m cutting a flash animation company reel in fcp with AE designed tranistions.

What David is saying is that you have to convert your Flash animations into a format (8 or 10 bit Uncompressed, if your system is equipped with a capture card) that is appropriate for use in video editing applications. Flash wont work correctly in FCP or any other video editing program I know of. Perhaps Premeire, now that Adobe owns Flash.

Perhaps i’m not making myself clear, and thanks for the replies btw. The quicktimes i’m using in FCP are converted from ‘video quicktime’ exports from flash, then recompressed in AE with addition compositing and effects. Correct me if i’m wrong, i’m rendering out quicktime files with animation compression from AE at 720 x 486 D1. My sequence settings in FCP are set to the same. They are not ‘flash’ movies, but quicktimes rendered using flash source files. I’m intercutting someones reel that has both original source flash animation and straight after effects animations.
I do understand what you are saying about .fla files and flash codec quicktimes, i those don’t work at all.
In theory, to me, it seems that the converted flash movies out of AE should act the same way as any other file exported from AE to FCP. It has been working and i’m getting results, though there is still this odd playback problem where part of the image seems to freeze or ‘stick’ when scrubbing over the file in the sequence. It has been a good way to get flash animations to Digibeta, but the sequence gliching is driving me crazy.

Thanks for the clarification.
The Animation codec is still not a good choice for real time playback. It is not an editing codec (more of an intermediary codec). Try converting to 10 bit Uncompressed, which is optimized for playback in FCP.
