Help – missing reel numbers!?!
Posted by David Scott on July 4, 2006 at 9:23 amHi
I’ve just reopened a project from last week to recapture the media, only to find that some of the empty clips on timeline (and in browser) no longer have the reel numbers I gave them on original capture, and also the timecode has defaulted to media in 00:00:00:00 media out 00:02:48:00, where 2:48 = duration of original clip.
I’ve been to the autosave vault but they are the same.
Has anyone seen this and know of a workaround?
Many thanks

July 4, 2006 at 10:48 amI’ve never seen this issue on any version of FCP.
If you know the actual reel numbers that should be there, simply right click in the Reel bin and select the correct reel from the drop down list that appears.

July 4, 2006 at 12:07 pmThe first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.
Next:
THE FOLLOWING COMES FROM THE KEN STONE WEBSITE:
“Over 5,000 years ago Confucius wrote: ‘If you are toiling away, you have changed nothing and FCP heads South on you, [starts behaving in strange ways] then it is time to trash your FCP Preferences.’ ”Click the following link for instructions.
https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/trashing_fcp_prefs.html
A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).
There are versions for FCP (Pro) & FCE (Express) and a new one for FCP 5.Download these free Apple Scripts at

July 4, 2006 at 2:49 pmDavid, what happens when you put a clip into the Viewer window and select Modify/Timecode? Is an Aux TC selected somehow?
Have you checked the Item properties? (edit/item properties/timing tab)
Good luck. It sounds as if a database file that holds TC info got corrupted, but I have no idea what you would do in that case. I guess you would just restore from your most recent backup like all of us do when we have a problem (ha ha ha).

July 4, 2006 at 3:24 pmWell Ed and Bob
Thanks for your suggestions.
I had aready tried the auto save vault – they were also corrupt.
“what happens when you put a clip into the Viewer window and select Modify/Timecode? Is an Aux TC selected somehow?”
Trying this there was nothing in the box! Clicking on any of the TC’s reveled a reel no. 001 and TC’s all starting at 00:00:00:00, and the same in item properties.Looks like it’s time to erase and reintall FCP!
