I am finding 2 simple things rather difficult to do using FCP. Is there an easy way that i am missing?

    1. Vignette – At the moment I have to either export to motion or use a complex series of layers and masks in FCP.

    2. Grain – Neither FCP or Motion seem to have a feature to add noise or grain to a clip. So I am exporting to AFX to do this at the moment.

Or are these things that I have to get a “third party plugin” for?

Look in your generators. Try Render/Noise for grain and shapes for vignette. There are third party plug-ins that will do the work for you. One place to look for a tutorial on vignette, is kenstone.net

there’s a free vignette filter, plus a free “face light” filter available here:

I made a vignette from scratch using the gradient generator set to radial, black to white. Stick this over your footage and set its mode to “multiply”. Play around with the generator settings to vary the look of the vignette. Also play around with adding filters to the gradient such as gamma , setup etc to give you different vignette effects…
