Yay! Another HD Format! Just what we need!
I pick up my copy of TV Technology today and on the front page….
“Sony, Panasonic Launch AVCHD. New Hi-Def standard could be an effective competitor to HDV. Advanced Video Coding HD”
Aimed at consumers, but then HDV was aimed at consumers originally too.

I guess we should be grateful that it’s 2 manufactures working together for a change! Thank god this isn’t Ikegami or someone coming up with another ‘revoloutionary technology’.

Does this mean that Sony will stop making HDV camcorders?

I doubt they will. Sony has put way too much into HDV marketing and advertising. I would have to say that Sony’s intention was to create a cheaper more friendly version of HD for the comsumer market and what better way than to include your competition. You heard the saying, “keep your friends close and your enemies closer”. That’s called great business.

This is just a method to record HD onto a mini DVD for consumer camcorders. It’s a natural evolution to consumer camcorders which record SD on mini DVDs. I don’t think this will affect HDV.

Just goes to prove technology is to fast now for it’s own good. Having so many formats, can IMHO, have a negative effect. Seems to me there should be a pro HD/SD format, consumer HD/SD format. In those parameters you have varying degrees of equipment, not format, to choose from.
Of course, I know this is far too simplistic, and will never happen, but it’s fun to dream.

When we went to digital I was hopin’ that the industry would make it easier. I couldn’t have been more disappointed. I thought 10 Tape formats were too much.
Should have occured to me that manufacturers would make it so that a pro had to buy more gear naturally, that’s nothing new.
I can’t believe what’s going on.
Blu Ray vs HD DVD’s another example of this. Cripes we’re going to need TWO burners.

Classic shooting themselves in the foot. The HD-DVD Blue-Ray fiasco hasn’t just slowed high-def on DVD… it has put the brakes on HD.
How many consumers out there have HD ‘compatible’ TVs but don’t have the tuners or HD signal connnected to it? If its confusing for us whats it like for the consumer?!
The sad thing is DVD had really set out blueprint on how to do it right; a worldwide format that provides a quality component signal, interactivity, user friendly interface and offers copyright protection.
HD looked like it was finally going to make the big push into the home. IMHO I think the HD format war will slow the process and push HD in the home out another year or two. MTC.

Another format.
I’m reminded of a story Robert Moog told when came down the mountain from Asheville to give a talk about the theramin.
He had a tape of Clara Rockmore performing on the theramin in her NY City apartment made in the early 60’s i believe. He wanted to release it on DVD, but he couldn’t find a machine to play the format. He had to go to Japan to a collector that restores old tape machines in order to get the information off the tape.
If you find an old piece of film, you can tell what’s one it with a light bulb.
