FCP on New MacBook Pro
I’ve just bought a new MacBook Pro and I am wondering what Codec I have to use to get real time playback on my clips.
I have a bunch of movies rendered from After Effects that are rendered with the Animation codec. When I bring them into FCP
is says it needs to be rendered.Sorry…. been a while since Ive used FCP. I’m cutting a new reel and it sure would be quicker to edit in real time rather then
waite for Ram previews.Hope somone can help.

Can you post what kind of file >size, format etc your original is, and what settings you are using in FCP?
I am by no means an expert, but my suggestion would be that you need to have your footage ‘matching’ your sequence. For example, if I have a quicktime movie that is 1440×1080 pixels, I set my sequence settings to >Easy Setup> HDV1080i
Once your sequence matches your footage, you will no longer need to render your footage. That said, if your footage isn’t native to FCP it will need rendering regardless. Just apple+r your timeline to render, but every time you make a change, you will need to re-render to watch it back, which will slow you down. But at least it’s not a RAM preview!
Again, I’m no expert, so anyone who knows better than me (the majority of you here!) please, correct me!

The files must match the sequence settings in order to get RT playback.
Another way to approach this is to convert your QT movies with the anamation codec to uncompressed video 8 or 10 bit, and then setup a standard uncompressed sequence to edit them in. Course this will require fast enough disk drives to handle the data rate. An eSata array, or a G-Raid (FW 800) would handle the playback…
Might post the exact properties of these source clips. Anamation codec and what size?

I just bought a new MacBook Pro, With a faster 100 rpm drive. If I convert all of my animation codec movies to uncompressed video 8 bit, will I get
RT playback? Another option would be to convert everything to DV NTSC but the quality is’nt as good. Based on my computer. (MacBook Pro) Out of the box can it realisticly only be used for an Off-line edit suite? And if I wanted to On-line the project would I have to bring it to an On-line suite?
Or connect my laptop to a raid?Sorry just getting back into this. Thanks for the respones so far.

You should not use the internal drive for your media.
External FW 800 or SATA RAID (using card) will get you RT with uncompressed media.
