I’m new to learning FCP and am working on an iMac G5. I realize that this is hardly the ideal setup for video editing as i should have a power Mac with dual processor but can i still add a NTSC video monitor? If so, what’s the best way to hook up to iMac?

Also, I am thinking of adding an external hard drive via firewire to help cushion the task of logging and capturing (thanks to Kevin Monahan from his awesome book!). Will this work well with the iMac?

    thanks in advance everyone,

    David

[dwheel] “r but can i still add a NTSC video monitor?”

Sure, you can use you DV camera and feel your DV feed to it and that to an NTSC monitor. Or you can pick up a Canopus ADVC-100 (or maybe it’s the 200 now) and again, feed out via Firewire to a monitor.

Ok, so then I’m assuming you’re currently capturing to your internal harddrive? BIG no no. Never capture media to your system drive. Your system will develop problems and drop frames in short order. Only use an a dedicated media drive for your media, either an extra internal drive or external drive. In your case, it will need to be an external and as long as you’re just editing DV, FW 400 will work just fine.
