Correctly compositing widescreen image
Working on Final Cut 4.5 /G4.
My source footage was shot on 35mm, at NTSC DV 720×480
The footage looks fine in the source window, displayed as square pixels. In the sequences they all appear squashed.
In After Effects at D1.DV 1 NTSC Widescreen 1.2, it looks fine.
The sequences default to DV 3:2, any other aspect requires a render. Why is it my sequences don’t just composite the image as it appears in the source window?

What? 35mm refers to film. You mean telecined to DV? What camera did you shoot this with? It might be anamorphic and your sequence isn’t set to anamorphic.
Go into the Easy Setups and select the setting that matches and use that. There should be a DV 16:9 setting.

It was telecined to DV
Easy Set up is for digitizing. Its already digitized. And there is no DV NTSC Widescreen set up.

OK, go to your Audio?video settings, select Sequence Presets and choose DV NTSC ANAMORPHIC.

Not true, Easy Setup is for a lot more than just digitizing — its also the most foolproof way to properly setup new sequences in a project. Once you set your Easy Setup properly any new sequence you open will have the proper settings.
