Printing a 23.98 timeline to mini-dv
My newest short film was recently selected as a finalist for the SXSW Click festival. The film was shot on the Panasonic Varicam at 23.98 frames per second, 720p. My final cut timeline sequence is DVCPRO HD (720p60) @ 23.98. The festival wants a mini-dv version of my film by this Wednesday and I am having a bitch of a time producing this as I don’t have a mini-dv deck at my disposal; nor am I sure this would help. I have a clamshell but it will, of course, not play my HD timeline. When I try to export a quicktime and re-import to Final Cut on a DV/NTSC timeline the picture is squeezed. I’ve exported as 16:9 (its native format) as well as 4:3 and it screws up both ways.

I don’t have experience with the different frame-rates and resolution and whatnot…BUT if the only problem you have is that the image is squeezed (tall and narrow) then here’s how to fix that:
Double click the file once it’s in the timeline and go to the MOTION tab and then open up the “Distort” features and change “Aspect Ratio” to -33.
That will give you a letterboxed image. Assuming everything else is fine, that looks like the one step you’re missing.
