from HD-SDI switcher to Final Cut Pro.
Hi,
I have been digging all over the forums and the net for the answer to this question:
I will have a multi-camera live event recorded to DVCPro HD cameras, all genlocked and connected through HD-SDI to a switcher outputing a live cut to a deck.
Question, are there any HD-SDI switchers where I can store either an EDL (I know it’s limited to 2 tracks) or XML to bring all the cuts I made during the live event into FCP later on? How can I fine-tune all the cuts made during the live event later on?I heard about On-Air feature on Blackmagic Multibridge, but it is limited only to 2 cameras, and it is still not clear if I can come back to those cuts later on in the post.

Nothing that I’ve ever heard of can do this. I would capture the entire switched Master and then make edits as necessary using the Camera Tapes. Since it was all captured HD-SDI, the master will be as clean as the camera tapes.
You said all the cameras were genlocked so I’m assuming they have jam sync TC as well so it should be a very easy edit to simply watch the master and make notes of where you want to go back and bring in shots from the original camera tapes.

Since it’s a live event and the switcher does not deal with timecode tracking from the master timecode generator (it needs to be providing jam sync code to all cameras) which is essential to create an EDL there is no way to create an EDL.
In the old days of CMX (a linear editing controller) you could playback all your tapes and do a live cut via the controller with an EDL of all your cuts.
But this was only possible because the controller was playing back tapes where it could read the timecode from the vtr.The point of a line cut is to trim down alot of the editing in advance while on site.
Ideally unless the director on site was a complete idiot you only need to trim down the line cut and dip back to the iso reels for reaction shots or to extend shots etc.
In FCP you can use the multicam feature and load in the linecut and all the iso reels thereby using the line cut as a guide. It would be very useful to record the director’s intercom feed so you could also hear the cue for “ready cam” and “take camera”.
If you record the intercom audio you can easily recreate the entire by listening to the director’s cues.
