FCP > AE > FCP > Compressor *** BitJazz Sheer Video Codec ***
I am working in FCP – timeline settings NTSC DV (footage was captured via firewire NTSC DV). My timeline contains no filters, transitions or renders, just basic cuts.
I am exporting to AE for some heavy color correction as well as some compositing/graphics/titling. In the end I will need to export to MPEG-2 (via Compressor) for final delivery on DVD.
My questions are:
1) When exporting from FCP to AE – should I be export my clip using the Sheer Video codec / or the 8bit or 10bit uncompressed setting? Is that overkill, since I only made cuts? Would it be worth it to change my sequence settings to the Sheer Video Codec and then render before exporting?
2) It is my understanding that if I render my AE file to an uncompressed 10-bit file or to the Sheer codec, my graphics and heavy color correction will benefit greatly. Below are the Sheer codec settings – would it be overkill to render to Sheer Y’CbCr[A] 10bv 4:4:4:[4]? I’ve been rendering to Sheer Y’CbCr[A] 10bv 4:2:2:[4] with stunning results, but I’m wondering under my circumstances, what would be best?

Purchase the Automatic Duck Pro Importer and simply export an XML from FCP and then import your timeline directly to AE. You gain nothing by exporting from FCP in any other codec but DV.

Not if you’re going back to DV as final output. All of your material will be compressed again on the way out and you’ll lose anything you’ve gained and in reality, your video will take a bigger hit with the 2nd level of compression applied to it.
Why are you CC’ing in AE? Are you using Sythetic Aperture? You can use that within FCP.

First off, thanks for your generous response. I’m really trying to get a good grip on this codec issue…

I am CC in AE because AE 7.0 came with Sythetic Aperture. I want to avoid spending more money for the plugin for FCP > but now I’m thinking it might be worth it.

What’s your take on the Automatic Duck Pro Importer. Is there any other solution, or is this the only way to go? Is this the real deal?

Here’s another question.
Say I am working in FCP timeline DV-NTSC. I create a graphics sequence in AE, and then export it using an uncompressed 10-bit codec. If I add that sequnce to my FCP timeline, should I create a new uncompressed timeline sequence, and add everything, or do I add it to the DV-NTSC timeline, change the sequence settings to Uncompressed, and then render all of the clips. I’m worried that render is causing informational loss.
