Wiebetech Bus Powered 3.5″ SATA to FW800 adaptor for MacBook Pro.
Hi,
I am going to trade my G5 to for a 17″ MacBook Pro.
Hard drive options seem expensive for a laptop (especially bus powered) but I came across the Wiebetech SATA dock: https://www.wiebetech.com/products/satadock.php
This allows you to use a 3.5″ SATA drive and bus power it from FW800 on a laptop. Might be great for offloading P2 cards (from an HVX200 Camcorder) in the field…especially if you are giving a backup drive to the director…and keeping a drive copy for yourself.
Has anyone used this SATA dock unit? I am wondering if there are any speed bottlenecks or issues with DVCPROHD editing.

A couple of thoughts:
-Your drive is exposed, it’s not in an enclosure. In the office yes, but in the field?
-Be careful of what drive you choose for bus power. Some drives require too much spin-up power
for bus power.
It might be better to offload a P2 card directly to a large MacBook internal drive and transfer it later
than to rely on bus power in the field.
