I want to play 5.1 audio from FCP5. It’s embedded in my HD-SDI port, but don’t have anything that can get all 6 channels out of the SDI. I also have s/pdif coming from the Decklink HD Pro card but that’s only 2 channel. Can you play 6 channels of audio in FCP out of the G5’s Digital Audio Output (Toslink cable)? I noticed M-Audio has a Revolution 5.1 PCI card but I didn’t know if it would interface with FCP5. Anyone doing this kind of stuff?

I use the M-Audio Revolution 5.1 PCI card in my Dual 1.8 GHz G5 with FCP 5.1.1 and once you set up the output channels within your timeline (and in sequence settings) it works just fine.

You need to use the Beta 1.1.1 driver with this card as they don’t have a driver specific to OS X 10.4.6.

Also export OMF from FCP will take you audio out as it appears iin your timeline to an external 5.1 editor (I use Bias Deck 3.5.3).

To play 5.1 audio you need a reciever that supports that many channels of physical hardware… QT supports 24ch but only uses as many as you have hardware for. So if you want 5.1 then you’ll need some card or reciever for it… as for compatibilty you should check with the manufacturer…. but there is no reason in principle why it would not work. Since FCP and everything else runs audio through Core Audio… and QT… which all supports at least 24chs… or more…
