  • Possible Issues??? Out Of Sync Captures???

Posted by David Roth weiss on June 7, 2006 at 4:46 am

    FOOD FOR THOUGHT:

There suddenly seems to be a rash of posts on this forum about captures that lose sync, and I have to admit, I have recently experienced several incidents of the same issue, which I have never had before since owning FCP. Today when I experienced several annoying (albeit long) out of sync captures, it occured to me that something, FCP 5.1.1, or the latest QT update, or the latest O.S update, may have an issue that has somehow gone unidentified. Does anyone else think they might notice that something possibly has gone awry???

I’d like to hear your thoughts please…

I haven’t bothered to read most of those posts, Roth, but are there common threads amongst them?
I have been capturing 40 minute DV tapes as single clips for the last few days and have no such issues.

Umm, just a second, lemme go check that.
Nope, perfect sync. No problems with conventional DV on my systems.

Thanks Bogie, then my problem is most likely an issue caused by dubbing VHS stock footage “viewers” to DV without reference. Glad its not a new issue within FCP.

I could see why you’re having problems. VHS stuff should really be passed through a TBC to avoid instability while capturing. If you don’t have one and need big ol’ captures, it’s better to dub to DV first IMHO.

    Kevin,

Its the dubs to DV that are actually creating the problem. Unfortunately, the giant worldwide stock house we use is stuck in the world of VHS viewers, which is a royal pain in the neck for me. Everything is a workaround.

The noise introduced in VHS dubs can lead a long capture astray; I’ve experienced that.

    Kevin,

I’m fairly certain that I could clear it up by running through the TBC on my UVW-1800, but, since I’m running ref off my BM card, that too creates issues.

    David,

The other day I captured several MiniDV tapes via FW into FCP 5.0.4, QT 7.1, OS 10.4.4 with no sync issues at all. The tapes had an average of 75 minutes of footage and I captured each one as a single clip. Panasonic Master series 83 min. tapes, and the source footage was a mix of Sony and Canon cameras.

Kevin – how on earth could noise affect sync?
