Blocky QT motion issues M100 to FCP
Exported a Quicktime movie(mix of Beta SP and DV source material 2:1 compression) Medium Quality Apple DV setting 29.97 from a G3 Media 100 OS 9.2 Quicktime 5 system SCSI RAIDs to a Lacie 300G firewire 400 drive.
Attached Lacie to an IMac dual 1.8 FCP5.1 QT7 system with 2G RAM.
Getting blocky playback on the canvas and viewer and also the QT Player with images containing lots of motion. No blockiness on locked down interview material.
Want to create an DVD on the FCP system.
Have tried various RT settings and still getting blocky playback.
Should I transfer everything to DV tape on the M100 system and then redigitize onto my FCP system? The M100 is on it’s last leg and I need to get everything into my FCP system.
Are my firewire drives not able to keep up with the QT material?
I think I am getting the same blockiness on the QT5 player on the G3system since it is not going through the M100 card after it has been exported. -

Have you rendered everything in FCP? Are you viewing this on a video monitor? If the answer to either is ‘no’ then post back after you’ve rendered &/or hooked up a video monitor.

Thank you for the suggestion. I have rendered it out on the timeline, but have not looked at it on an NTSC monitor yet.

I’m betting the “medium quality” is your problem. Since DV is a set stream of 5:1 compression, you probably cut the image quality in half by using medium, but I’ll bet the file size is the same. DV is DV.
I assume you also cropped out 2 pixels at the top and 4 at the bottom as well. You need to do that to get DV 720×480 if you were working in 720×486 on the Media 100.
You really might just make things easier by going to tape from the media 100. Especially if you have fw out of the media 100. That would be the conversion. There would be no more conversion going into FCP via firewire.

Export an EDL. Give it a shot. The original material is dv? Working 640 x 480 in M100?

My suggestion is to hook up a DV deck to the output of your Media 100 and just dump everything you have. Organize it if you can but you just want to get everything off your drives that exists in a M100 format. However... Do those rat bastards at M100 still make a free decompressor? You should have it on your FCP system. Make disk images of your M100 media drives and use the decompressor to bring them into FCP. (Sorry, I realy miss my olde M100 but I don't even remember if the decompressor works liek this.) bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

Yes, they’ve had one for at least 2 years now. It’s available for download from their website. James can just export self-contained Quicktime files from his Media100, import them into Final Cut.
