  Help! Can’t open any FCP projects.

  This morning I was cleaning off my RAID to make room for new projects. I deleted some old media and found one project that needs to go to tape. So I tried to open the project in FCP5 and the screen wiped top to bottom and gave me a message that said, “you must restart your computer. Hold the power button or restart now.”, or something to that effect. So I restarted and dumped my prefs, then tried to open the same project, but again I received the same message. I have now tried to open 4 or 5 different projects and every time I am required to restart my computer.

  I can open FCP, create a new project, save the new project, then reopen it and everything is fine with the new project, but I can’t open any old projects.

  Any suggestions are greatly appreciated,

  To avoid problems in the future, don’t trash anything from the desktop, rather open the projects whose media you want to delete and use the “make offline” commands on the media, and use the “Render Manager” to delete render files associated with the sequences in the project.

  To get around your problem now though, the first thing to try is to take ALL media offline by putting it in another folder. Then see if you can open the project file, and reconnect a few at a time, until the crash shows up. (this is the way to find media that has become corrupted). You may have trashed an “av” file that was created when you captured media that needs to be there to see all of the media.
