Blurry Graphics
Posted by Brian Pitt on May 24, 2006 at 8:44 pmI have some graphics that I am adding to a video that appear very blurry when played back. They have been fully rendered, but still appear quite blurry. If I stop the playhead on the timeline, they become crystal clear…any ideas?

Are they set at even increments in the motion tab? Avoid anything that isn’t a whole number… See if that helps.

May 24, 2006 at 9:18 pmDid you set your Playback Quality to High or Dynamic? How bout your render settings? What kinda of footage are you working with, in what kinda of sequence settings? HD, DV, etc…? Shovel some more info our way, and we’ll see what we can come up with.

May 24, 2006 at 9:57 pmPlayback setting is set on High. Render Settings on highest. I’m using DV footage, the graphic is a PSD. 720×480 (video pixel aspect ratio). Sequence setting is DV.

#2 Playback is blurry
Shane’s Stock Answer #2:
ONLY JUDGE THE QUALITY OF YOUR MATERIAL ON AN EXTERNAL NTSC MONITOR, OR AT LEAST A TV.
1. Disable overlays on the canvas
2. Make sure you’ve rendered everything (no green bars at the top of the timelinehttps://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=24787
DV footage requires large amounts of data and many computations. In order to maintain frame rate and be viewable at a normal size, only about one-fourth of the DV data is used in displaying the movie to the screen. However, the DV footage is still at full quality, and is best viewed thru a TV or NTSC monitor routed thru your camera or deck.

May 24, 2006 at 10:06 pmSounds like the titles might not be on whole numbers. (Better than whole numbers would be whole even numbers). Does your text have any borders like thin lines? Even though it’s done all the time (heck I do it too) this should be avoided if possible. Any sarif’s? Those don’t play well with video either.
In all, DV is not very forgiving to titles. I work almost exclusive in DV25, and there are a lot of concessions you must make due to the amount of compression given to the format. That being said, there are some workarounds. Try creating a sequence in which your seq settings are for uncompressed 8 or 10 bit. Then drop your titles in. I’ve just started doing this and there is a difference (although IMHO a small one) in which the titles do look better. The down side of this is that all your video needs to be rendered, but it’s a pretty quick render.

May 24, 2006 at 10:14 pmdoes “0” count as a whole number? My graphic is basically covering the left third of the screen. I designed it in photoshop with the NTSC DV preset. Therefore, once I dropped the graphic in, I didn’t need to modify or move it at all. There isn’t even any text in the graphic, so that isn’t causing the problem.
I may have to re-capture my footage via blackmagic sp with a different codec. Do you think this might help?
thanks for your time… -

May 24, 2006 at 10:20 pmGo to your sequence>render menu and make sure ‘full’ is checked for both render all and render selection. Perhaps you are displaying an rt effect that isn’t fully rendered. Always always always render your graphics even if FCP thinks that they don’t need to be. It lies. Like Shane said, are you watching this on an NTSC monitor? If not, do so.

May 24, 2006 at 10:25 pmoh, I forgot to mention that. I am watching on a Sony HR 14″ Trinitron Monitor. It’s a good one…. 🙂
Yeah, my render settings are set to Full. I have never had this problem before. I may try the old “trash preferences” trick… -

May 24, 2006 at 11:03 pmRecapturing to another, less compressed codec will have a limited effect if the original footage is compressed from the get-go. Try it though, as a last resort, especially if you’ve never had this problem in the past. Also, I’m not confident that trashing your prefs and emptying your cache will work, but it won’t hurt either.
