    Hello there!

I was able to score a copy of Motion 2 after scouring the earth and asking around (Thanks George!)

Looking to upgrade it to FCP Universal and was wondering for those of you that upgraded from a single product like DVD Studio Pro, Soundtrack, or Motion, what did you get back from apple once you sent in your disc? Do you get a full boxed set with manuals? I’ve heard that if you have the full suite and do the upgrade, you only get a non-descript paper envelope with replacement DVD’s/CD’s.

    Just wondering.

You heard correctly. You’ll get all the discs and the little booklet with the legal information and code stickers. That’s it.

I did the same thing you are but with DVD Studio Pro. This was a second Final Cut Suite for me so I already had all the books, but in your case you’re out of luck. There’s always the help manuals, which should have all the same info in them. Not as easy to read as a nice big book, but I guess that’s what Apple expects you to use.

Thanks Jeff. At the office we have FCP5 Studio (which we need to upgrade to Universal)so i guess if I need to have a book in hand then those will do.
I am upgrading Motion 2 to FCP studio for my own personal copy, so when i go off on my own to start my own personal venture, i would have saved myself a ton of money doing it this way vs. buying a whole suite set from the get go.

That’s really too bad they don’t give you a full meal deal when you do the upgrade. I guess they are saving $$$ on shipping. Maybe i’ll just have to bring a MacBook Pro into the bathroom vs. just a manual for some light reading. : P

    Thanks again,

Do you know where I can get a stand-alone version of any of the programs that you can upgrade to the universal studio? I have the studio at work, but I would love my own personal copy. If I can get it for the right price, I’d love to!

I’m sure that standalones sold like hot-cakes once apple announced the upgrade option…

Unfortunately I bought the store last copy. I purchased my copy of Motion in Utah, and i’m located in St. Louis, MO, if that gives any perspective.

Apple stores used to have Motion , STP, etc in the stores, buy when i talked to them recently, they had to ship all of the copies back. I looked on ebay, but was very leery on buying, but i guess it works out for some people. I was fortunate enough to be looking at the cow classified when i email George Loch on where he found STP, and gave me the lead on Motion 2.

I’ve heard that the Academic version is upgradable to full retail, but i personally didn’t want to go that route if there were any problems.

Sorry i couldn’t be of help, but keep looking on the Cow, something might come up.

    intresting. I’m located in Utah.

Yeah, I checked out ebay, but of coarse the prices on any remaining stand alones are quite inflated. Still cheaper than buying the full studio though…

    I’ll keep searching. thanks.

Check all of the apple authorized resellers. Apple sent a request for them to return their stock but some were slow to do it and still have a few copies of these programs. Macdocs in Orem was were J. bought his but there is also a Macsomething in orem and a Macdocs in SLC. Ironically, I bought a second copy of STP form a shop in Missouri so J. and I are supporting each others local economies 🙂

    Good luck!

I worked with someone who had purchased FCP 1.0 and the 3.0 Upgrade and was wondering if I knew anyone who wanted to buy it. Is there an upgrade for the full studio from this configuration, though? If so, I’ll tell him to put it up on eBay.

yeah, you can upgrade from 3.0, but it is like $700. A little pricey, but not as bad as paying full price…
