I wanted to take Larry Jordan’s advice and have my two FW800 drives be ‘unjournaled’ for best performance, with my boot drive being journaled (OS 10.4).

When I select these external drives (not the volume) in the Disk Utility they are listed as ‘Mac OS Extended (Journaled)’. Whereas when I select the volume under these drives they are listed only as ‘Mac OS Extended’.

So my question is, how can I setup the external drives as Mac OS Extended (not journaled)? Or is this normal and only the volume(s) are listed as not journaled for drives that are not journaled?

You could just tell Spotlight to ignore those drives. I think that would give you the same result without having to reformat the drives.

Open the Spotlight pane from System Preferences. Choose the Privacy tab and add the external drives to the Privacy list.

You can turn on or off the journaling of a drive. I think you go into Disk Utility and
select the drive. At the top there’s a Enable Journaling button. I read that you can format
the drive as journaled, but turn it on and off when and if you want to.
