  • Importing mp2 files into FCP

Posted by Jon Boffa on May 13, 2006 at 3:35 am

I am working with a DVD I previously made but lost the rough footage. I bought Cinematize to capture the DVD contents, and to use within FCP and DVD Studio Pro to edit it again and burn other copies.
But for some reason the audio can only be captured in .mp2, and this format is not able to get imported in to FCP (says “File Error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown.”).
How can I get such audio in to FCP? I checked the Cinematize settings, and the “convert audio to AIFF” is grayed out and won’t allow me to select it.
The strange thing is such audio files can be used in DVD Studio Pro, but I don’t know how to perform basic edits in that program, and I would like to run the footage through FCP to clean it up too…

    Any help is much appreciated.

Don’t know about mp2, but iTunes will easily convert mp3’s to AIFF files.
The following is the procedure for mp3.
If iTunes will play the mp2 file, it will likely be able to convert it.

    ——————–
    iTunes> Preferences > Importing > Import Using: AIFF Encoder> Custom> 48.000 kHz, 16 bit, Stereo >OK

Drop your mp3 into iTunes window.
Select (highlight) the file you want to convert, then:

Advanced (Toolbar Menu)> Convert Selection to AIFF

iTunes will create a new file (in seconds) with the SAME NAME as the original, but ending with .aif
You can set up a special folder for iTunes to send it to, or just use Search to find where it “defaults to” on your HD.

Drag this new .aif file into your open FCP Browser.
The actual .aif file will (and can) stay in the iTunes folder, just its “reference” icon shows in the FCP browser.
It will play and edit just as any other media file in FCP.

    Thanks for the help.
My Advanced toolbar only shows the “Convert to AAC” (not AIFF or WAV option).

I did this, and still the same problem when trying to import the newly converted file.

How can I get the aiff option in iTunes?

in iTunes change the import pref to Aiff instead of the AAC and it will give you that option on convert to…

You can also try opening the file in Quicktime Pro and do an export (this is the way I do it with mp3 files)

    or download MPeg Streamclip.
    https://www.squared5.com/
does what Cinematize does, but will give you usable audio.
    oh, yes, it;s free…
