General Error on HDV capture
Hi, I have a problem capturing HDV from my Sony HDR-HC1 (PAL) into FCP 5.1 (on Macbook)
Everything seems to work, I can control the camera, the capture starts normally, but right in the end i get a not very informative “General Error” error message, and the clip is not stored.
I use the 1080/50 profile. When I set the camera to convert to DV the capture process works fine. Does this sound familiar to anyone?
Recording to an external FW drive with 250GB available, also tried directly to the internal drive.

Well, that’s easy. You can’t record to an external firewire drive and have your camera hooked to the same firewire bus. Let’s me explain… any of the firewire ports that are on your Macbook are using the same firewire bus – therefore you have a conflict here and on top of that, machine control typically runs at 100 mbits instead of the 400 mbits of standard firewire – which means your external drive is also running at 100 mbits. That won’t work.
Your only solution is to purchase a firewire adapter card for your notebook OR a better solution is to purchase a SATA card for your notebook and purchase an external SATA drive which has a better sustained throughput than a firewire drive.

Thank you for the tip, but the thing is – it works for my colleague 🙂
He has a different camera though, the HDR-FX1. Unfortunately he is another city,
so I can’t easily test if it is the camera or the software setup that is to blame.I have also tried capturing directly to the internal drive, still with General Error.
Is this an error that can appear if the target disk is too slow? I actually though that
HDV had the same data throughput as DV, or am I mistaken here?Regards,
