Mike, as one old PC guy to another… Buy yourself a new SATA hardrive for $100 and install from the ground up, reserving your present system drive for safety, just in case things don’t go as planned, or in case there’s a file you need from the old drive.

As an old Mac guy, the simpler thing might be to “carbon copy cloner” (a free app) your system drive to another drive where you have space. Now you have a backup of your system drive exactly.

Now just run the update. If everything runs swimmingly for a few weeks or a month, delete the carbon copy when you need space.

    Mike,

If you use Bret’s method you better make absolutely certain that your clone will boot after Carbon Copy Cloner does its thing. It has been known to make unbootable clones. My method is howevere 100% foolproof.

I wouldn’t make a bootable carbon copy clone. Just do an archive, which is essentially the entire drive in it’s own directory. You can look at all your files and make sure they’re there. Just a backup really. After all, you can reinstall the OS and apps. It’s your project files that are irreplaceable. A simple software update shouldn’t risk anything. In fact, just updating to 5.1 shouldn’t be that big of a deal, but backups are always a good idea.

There is no foolproof backup or cloning method that doesn’t involve testing. If you feel the need to back up your system, make the clone and try to start from it. Be prepared to do it again or to buy other software.

There is no compelling need to backup anything when installing FCP51. Good grief, it’s just an application upgrade.
    1. Put the disks in the drive
    2. Push the install button
    3. Feed disks
    4. Get back to work.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

Then again, bogie doesn’t look both ways when crossing the street, runs with scissors, and only cuts off the beat…..

Well, I don’t know about cutting off beat, but if he recommends upgrading without a backup he clearly couldn’t be working on anything he values very highly, and so I’d imagine the street crossing issue and the scissors thing are probably right up his alley too.
