mixed media timeline
I am editing a reel and have captured media in basically 2 formats, DV NTSC for my DVCAM footage and 525i 29.97 10 bit uncompressed from my Beta deck through my Kona 2 card. What timeline sequence settings should i use for the best output (probably final on DVD and a Beta master) and what are the rules regarding these types of scenarios? Do i have to Media Manage my uncompressed clips to work in realtime with the DV settings or vice versa? I need the combo of realtime for editing swiftly and the best quality i can get from my footage for output. Thanks,

What you’re described is not a good scenario for what your stated goals.
Given that you’re editing DVDCAM and uncompressed together, there’s no way you’re going to be editing in realtime with the way you’ve captured your footage. If possible, you should have digitized the DVCAM footage through the Kona card as uncompressed, and edited all on an uncompressed timeline.
And, editing the uncompressed footage on a DV timeline is certainly bassackwards, and guaranteed to take your best footage down to DV level, which is considerably diminished quality and color depth.

Thanks for the info. The problem is on the Kona2 card there is no component input. I am using a JVC BR-HD50 for DVCAM footage and the only outputs are component, s-vid, composite, firewire, and HDMI. Also i’ve had to digitize footage from DVD Dailies via my analog>firewire converter to DV. You can see there are many media types and some great shots from pieces of the DVD dailies even that should be used in the reel. Just thought of something…I’ll try to output my DV footage an a timeline to DigiBeta, then recapture using the uncompressed setting. A little more work but worth it in the editing and output process.

Couldn’t you either…
1. just run the component out of the DV deck into the component in of the DigiBeta and dub your DV to digibeta – saving one step
or…
2. run the component through the digibetadeck (as above) and load directly into FCP – saving 2 steps
Assuming your Digi has component in?

Yes I tried that and it is one way to send 10bit uncompressed into FCP, it does work. But there is no device control when skipping 2 steps and I actually want to make Beta dubs of this stuff so as to never have to capture from a DVD player again! Is the fact that i captured it into FCP through the Kona2 enough to make it uncompressed 10 bit video, or am i confusing something? Is my footage now “up-res’d” or are quality and format two separate ideas here? In other words is it enough for it to be captured in the 10 bit uncompressed codec to be of considered a higher quality, or is that a misnomer? It is still DVCAM quality just captured using a codec that i need to edit with other true 10 bit uncompressed footage?

Don’t know about what timeline you should be using, but I can recommend that you rip your DVD’s to QT with http://www.DVDxDV.com – rather than going the analog route you suggested. It’s a fantastic program that is pretty fast – and not too expensive.
Apparently MPEGStreamclip is free and works well, too.Wayne
