  • Creating a Floating head? Confusing question ensues…

Hopefully this doesn’t sound too confusing….

This is what I want the end result to be: I’m trying to create a “floating head” on screen. I have my background image (1), and then I have a photo (2) (that I’ve scanned) of someone’s face that I want to be moving around in that background image(1).

I know the “cutout” won’t be perfect, but is there a way I can put a circle around the face in my picture so that it’s just the head on screen, along withmy new background image?

I was experimenting with the shapes and composite mode. I was able to put a circle around the face in the photo using “multiply” in composite, I believe (and have it cut out the photo’s background), but I was hoping to take that circle head and put it on a new background on screen.

    Does this make sense?

    Thanks!

    Do you have Photoshop?

If you “cut out” the head in Photoshop you can create an Alpha Channel around it and it will be easy to “float” it in FCP with the composite mode.

If you have black around the head NOW, you might try to “Key” it (Key is a video filter) over your background. (V1-Bkg, V2-Head with Luma Key filter applied)

It is actually very easy to do what you want, but I need to know more of what you’ve done, EXACTLY.

    Use the Matte>Shape Mask Filter.
