HVX 200 24PN Editing Workflow
We shot to P2 cards, brought the files into FCP (960×720) and they play fine on 16×9 sequence, however when trying to output QT movies, etc., the files are now 640×720. Of course we can resize in AE, but since we’re not planning to output to tape deck, how can we stay at the 1280×720 format we shot and edit in. Does anyone have experience w/editing and exporting 24PN setting from HVX200?

Yes,
Export through QT conversion
720p on DVCPRO HD is 960×720
FCP “sizes” it to 1280×720
I am exporting PhotoJPEG QT’s at 1280×720
for external clients stock footage purposes.
Yesterday did a green screen and right after the shoot
we took best takes and exported PhotoJPEG QT’s at 1280×720
for clients use with After Effects on PC.

I’m getting ready to capture hours of footage directly from the camera to FCP and noticed the disparity in the Sequence settings (DVCProHD 720p24 defaults to 960×720) and the capture settings (DVCProHD 720/24p defaults to 1280x 720). Will FCP play back properly this way and is this the resizing you’re talking about?

We captured files at DVCPRO HD 720p60 which gave us 960×720 files that become 16×9 in FCP sequence w/same setting and works great.

How are you outputting? Quicktime Movie or Quicktime Conversion?

Apple has some white paper PDFs on their site that address the P2 workflow. Not sure of the link, but you should search their support or FCP areas for this.

I don’t capture from tape but yes DVCPRO HD at 720p is 960×720, FCP does the re-size to 1280×720. Now when you want to export a file there are as many ways to do it as all the settings you see. You export needs will determine your export requirements. For example, if you need to provide a file to another FCP editing another section of your 720 24p show then you would export as a direct QT file. If you need to provide a file to a PC user for use in Vegas or After effects then you would need to export an RGB file using PhotoJPEG at least 95% and at 1280×720 using QT conversion. Just go and try it to see what I mean.

HD formats recorded in camera do this type of horz pixel scaling. Think of it as digital anamorphic-
Because you are working with the native video file as captured– HDV, HDCAM and DVCPROHD all do thisso that as past of the compression, so that all of the data actually can be squeezed onto the tape. (JVC’s implementation of HDV being the exception)Video Compressed using the DVCPROHD format in 720p your video will be recorded at the tape head ( or P2) at the 960×720 frame size The 1080 version of DVCPROHD ends up being 1280×1080. It is not magic or voodoo. The video out signal will comply to the SMPTE spec for the video format you have chosen to shoot.
You will need to Select “QT Conversion” for your output so that that aspect ratio is correct for NON-DVCPROHD materials.Technically
