  • S/N problem with AfterEffects

Posted by John Flip01 on November 27, 2006 at 8:11 am

I have a customer, that has problems with After Effects.
The problems seems to be on several different mac’s:
    Pb’s and Workstations alike.
After Effects seems to register on their s/n, but on next restart, the app
seems to want to be registered again.
(The Activation option from within the app is grey and there’s no activation
    alert/reminder upon registering the app.)
After Effects seems to work fine as long as the machine stays open, but as
soon as it is retsarted – one has to reg. Anew.
The two enclosed screen dumps, shows the contents of the trash after
    restart.
I assume that the trashed files has something to do with the problem?
(I have got screen dumps of trash contents – and a reg db from one of the machines with the problem)

    Kind regards

This sounds like the kind of problem that would be best solved by calling Adobe tech support. If the app was recently purchased, you may have free tech support for 90 days. If not, you may be able to get an Adobe response on the Adobe forums.

One thing comes to mind, as I read your post more carefully. If it is one S/N over multiple networked machines (that’s actually illegal), Adobe maybe be preventing the install, and nothing can be done about that aside from purchasing other licenses. Now if it’s a site licence, you’ll have to call Adobe to sort that out.

(This is assuming that the S/N is legit. If not, no help will be found here on that issue.)

    Anybody else?

    Hi again,
The sw is definitely legit. It is the Danish State Television..hehe..
    – but you are right that it is a site license – and therefore the same s/n on all machines.
I got the idea that the reason for the problem might be:
    1) Virex – which they have oon all machines – and I have been experiencing problems with Anti-virus sw before (f.inst Norton AV and Photoshop)
    and/or
    2) The network. They are behind a rather elaborate and extensive firewall, proxy etc. so if the app ‘phones home’ to be able to work that might be the cause (A strange thing is that the s/n is accepted and the app works – but there’s not any ‘activation request’ – and the Activation menu is dimmed. (will try to install on a formatted machine to see if the regular s/n, activation process is able to go through.

Will get back to you on that in a day or two

    Kind regard and thanx

    Ouch. Firewalls.

Can you try this: unplug the machine from the network, install AE, close AE, relaunch AE, close, then connect to the network, launch AE, close AE and relaunch AE?

If the call goes out, it goes out – AE wopuldn’t activate at all if it didn’t receicve the validation key. I’m more suspicious that your user priviliges are too low. In order to permanently create directories and configurations you at least have to be a power user. Check that as well.

    Hello again,
I did the User privy’s check/update earlier – and the main user is an admin user.
However – on today’s check – I found no Virus software on the individual machines. It’s all taken care of by a MAc adress validation. proxy, firwall, virus checking system at the ‘gate’s’ of the company. (Som of the people using AE also use the machines for FinalC and have a need for full-speed machines, so they are not happy about f.inst. having anti virus sw running on the macxhines – as well as as much as possible has been switched off for speed reasons).
I did find that I could log on as Root – and key in the s/n – and then AE worked fine – even after restart. I have instructed the local It guy to try and do a clean root-install and see if it does the trick.
Will get back as soon as I know the results of this test
    Kindest
