    Hey All,

I’m working on a multi-cam project in which we are combining HD and SD cameras. The HD tapes are camera tapes, the SD tapes are deck tapes via a cable from the camera.

All the tapes have synced timecode, but when they are laid out in the timeline, the SD drifts from the HD. We are downcoverting from an HD deck during Capture.

Any ideas? We are assuming that the problem lies with either the cable situation on set or something in the DownCovert.

    Please Help,
    Suzanne

Not sure, but two things occur to me:

    1) Simple one, but are the SD and HD records both at the same frame-rate? I know it’s kind of obvious, but HD records have many more options, so perhaps an error was made on set, perhaps (if you are US-based) you have a drop-frame issue??

    2) You have an issue with your capture device and/or an issue with the deck control side of your capture card. If it is an HD deck you are using, are you using the correct control protocol on the capture window – this directly relates to the SMPTE timecode your system reads off the tape. Try adjusting this setting, or try a capture from an SD deck for the SD footage to see if that makes any difference.

Probably you have tried all this, give us all more details (format and decks) and I’m sure someone can help…

What kind of drive array are you using?

    More Info:

The set is filming 29.97 DF all around. That was our first guess, but doesn’t appear to be the problem. The timeline is also DF. The HD tapes are being captured from a Sony HDW-F500 deck downconverted. The SD tapes are DigiBeta captured from Sony DVW-A500 decks.

    FCP5
    Kona 2 card
The decks exist in a Master Tape Room and patched into the edit bays.
The HD is drifting BEHIND the SD. We found this strange thinking that if the SD camera were using the cable into the deck on set, that would cause the SD to drift behind the HD. The opposite is happening.
The show is using a SAN Drive setup. I personally don’t know a lot about it.

We also tried dubbing an HD tape to DigiBeta and capturing that way, but again, it was happy with the other HD cameras and drifted from the SD cameras, so that won’t work.

Basic Question: Can you have a project with both HD and SD footage and have it sync up happily?

I think that’s your problem. You need to use NDF timecode for it to match up.
