  • Exporting 16:9, 30P for DVD

Posted by Mrheineman on March 29, 2006 at 9:46 pm

I shot a doc short using an XL2 in 16×9, 30P. I have edited on a 16:9 secquence in FCP. I am hopefully going to put it on a DVD using DVD Studio Pro. Is it better to export on the 16:9 sequence and then let DVDSP letterbox or letterbox it in a 4×3 sequence and then export?

Also, should I be exporting wiith an editing Timebase of 29.97 or 30?

Also also, should the timecode rate be “Same as editing Timebase,” 30 Drop Frame, or 30 Non-Drop Frame?

Thank you so much! I am trying to submit to a festival in 2 days so help would be greatly appreciated asap.

Don’t letterbox it in final cut. DVDSP has 16×9 as an option. Use that. That will also save you time. And just export in your native frame rate.

    Ok, thanks!

Excuse my ignorance, but is the native framrate for an XL2 at 30 P 30 or 29.97?

Also, is it better to export to Quicktime or using Compressor?

    Thanks,

    Matt

NTSC is 29.97… has to do with dropped frame (I think.) We just round up to 30 to make it easy. Unlike PAL which is 25 and 25 dangit!

I like using compressor to send to DVDSP. Not sure if it’s better, just seems I like the 90minute high quality preset the best.

When you load it into a track for DVDSP, there is a window in the lower right that will give you track properties… THERE click the button that gives you FORCED LETTERBOX.

Thanks CaptM. So, to clarify…I should just stick with the 29.97 timecode?

Also, when I am using compressor, it says, “Can’t connect to Background proccesses” when I press submit. How do I fix this/begin to export?

    Thanks!

    Perhaps this might help?

    yes, stick with 29.97 timecode.

Now — for your OTHER problem.

That’s almost another thread over in the DVDSP forum. You might need to trash a bunch of stuff and then reinstall Compressor… but ask over there, please. Don’t want to give you wrong info.

Here’s a work around that works:

In FCP — File – Export – Quicktime Movie.

Keep CURRENT SETTINGS and make sure the self-contained box is NOT checked.

    Name it and save it.

Open DVDSP and import THAT file as an asset.

Build your dvd and DVDSP will encode the file for you. You can go into the preferences if you want and mess with the settings… but again, that’s for the DVDSP forum.

    Good luck to you,

    CaptM
