  • Keying a Moving matte

Posted by Ezio Taranto on March 16, 2006 at 7:36 am

In the past I have used an image matte to successfully key a moving clip over a generated background. however i am trying the same now and the key is not working.
Method: i have placed my background on V1, the matte on V2, and the fill video on V3. i then apply the ‘image matte’ filter to the matte on V2 (the matte keys out perfectly) but the fill on V3 is unaltered.
can anyone help me out here?
    Thanks Ezio

The image mask filter does not require the matte layer to be in the timeline. It uses an image well, but it’s not animateable. The technique you’re using sounds like you want to apply a travel matte, luma or alpha, to the top layer with no composite mode applied to the matte layer on V2.

    All the best,

    Tom

    Hi Ezio,

    V1-background
    V2-animated matte
V3-fill: click on the fill clip in the timeline to hilight it, then go to menu Modify>Composite Mode>Traveling Matte Alpha or Luminace.

    good luck!
