  Standard definition in an HD time line

  Is there another way to bring SD into an HD timeline that would look any better than the software render that FCP offers you?

  Yes. Hardware conversion to HD and then capture media as native HD. Best converter to consider is Teranex.

  red giant have just come out with a $99 plugin to do this very thing
