  • Jpeg and TGA render at low rez

I’m working in version 4.5 and have large jpeg files that I need to lay out on my timeline. There’s a total of about 500 that I am working with at the moment. The problem I have is that they render low rez. Here’s the breakdown

    Place jpeg on timeline
    lay background image under it
    add lower thirds

This forces me to render obviously but the render isn’t the same quality as when I play the video out with out the background and the lower third. If I leave the jpeg alone and play the timeline it plays at full resolution. When I stop it and sit on a still frame it reverts to a low resolution, which I figure to be normal anyhow. But if I render the timeline at all it plays half resolution, I have checked the render settings and everything seems normal to me.

    Here’s what I have tried.

Lowering the picture size to 720 x 486 this did not work.
Lowering the resolution this did not work
saving the files as different types, TGA / PICT/ TIFF.

Any suggestions would be great most of my day has been wasted toying wth this gremlin.

We see this a lot and the biggest problem with most people is that they are confused by judging graphics on the computer display. A complete FCP “System” includes a video monitor in the chain.

    Read on:

First of all, rendering in versions 4-4.5 is pretty terrible. I suggest upgrading to 5.0 when their rendering engine was markedly improved.

The other thing is to make sure that your graphics lie on whole even integers in the Motion Tab and that you are rendering at Full Quality. Make sure the dark green bars are checked in the Seq>Render menus.

Also make sure that you are in Safe RT at Full Frame Rate (not dynamic) in the RT pop up menu.

Finally, always judge rendered graphics on a pro video monitor. A TV set is better than nothing because you can never trust the Canvas for judging the quality of your graphics.

Can you explain what you mean by this? I have checked all the other options you mentioned and they are all set correctly. I am judging this on a trinitron monitor.

Look in the Motion Tab. Go to the first keyframe for “Center”. Take a look. Is the X value an even number?

If you fly graphics, the X values in the Motion Tab’s “Center” parameter must always be keyframed on an even number. I don’t know how to be more clear than that.
