finding media
Hi
I am currently cutting my first job on FCP 5 with a 10TB block of xsan.
Everything appears to work ok, but I have a big concern regarding finding media; hopefully someone can help…
From time to time I would like to be able to view all media on my system quickly and easily, for example should me or my assistant accidently ‘lose’ a master clip from the browser (surely not!), or know that I need something from, say ‘reel 2’ but can’t remember which project ‘reel 2’ is located (seeing as ‘reveal master clip’ doesn’t cross projects).
To do this on local drives all I would do is use ‘spotlight’ or ‘find’ to locate ALL quicktime media on all drives, drag those clips to a new, temporary, bin in my project that I would call ‘all media’. This would enable me to do a normal media search in that bin, i.e. ‘reel’ order, ‘timecode’ order etc etc. Once located, I can either reveal in finder which should enable me to work out which project that it resides. Failng that I can just copy the clip into my working project.
The problem with XSAN is that neither find or spotlight seem to work. Is there any software out there that can overcome this ? If I had software that could not only ‘see’ the xsan folder structures and the media in them but could see the wrapper information such as reel number and tape number I would be positively orgasmic. Thanks
Danps apologies for anyone seeing this on the xsan forum, but there are workflow issues here that a fcp super user may have answers !!
