exporting a cropped piece of video
I have a clip that contains an animated map. The map location in each frame does not change. I want to save off the animated map part, not any of the rest of the video. I want the exported QT to be the size of the map part, not the orig clip size.. I can then use this in other projects. I have done this is Premiere and maybe just forgot how to do it in FCP

When you say size do you mean clip length or image size, as in pixels. If you are talking about making a subclip into it’s own QT, quicktime conversion will only make the .mov from your in and out points so that should work.

Hi,
I’m starting with a 720 x 480 clip. Let’s say there’s 10 frames in this clip. There is an animated map in each of the frames, of course it changes in each frame because it’s animated but it’s the same size and located in the same position in each frame. I want to cut out just the map part, let’s say it’s 200 x 200, in each of the 10 frames. I don’t want to scale it to the 720 x 480 size I just want to crop it and export it, so when I’m done I have a 200 x 200 QT mov where the map fills the frames.
Does that make senese?

OK, now I got it. Make a new sequence that is the dimensions you want (200X200 or whatever). Adjust the video in the motion tab so it only contains what you need be scaling and adjusting the position. Now eport your QT which should automatically be 200X200. Good Luck.

That was it, nicely done and thanks for the quick response! It took a little fiddling to get the seq size to match the piece of the map I wanted but I did get it there and exported.

You could just export the full frame and then use something like Digital Heaven’s DHBox to use just the map wherever in a sequence you needed it. Can’t beat the simplicity of that workflow, and it’s only $10.
