    Hi,
This may be a dumb question… what is the difference between capturing a clip in FCP versus Quicktime Pro? I’m wondering because I want to capture some clips on a PC and then use them in FCP. Is the capture engine on FCP 5 the same as QT Pro 7? Thanks!

No. It captures as MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264 and Device Native. Even if you capture DEVICE NATIVE with QT PRO, it will need to be converted to DV/NTSC before you can import and work with it in FCP…another step. Thus far no one has gotten a direct QT PRO capture to work in FCP (or reported it).

If you are going to use FCP to edit, capture with FCP. Why use a PC?

There’s a program from a company called Focus Enchancements that makes popular Firewire products for post production. It’s called “Firestore DV File Converter”. It lets you convert any type of DV file to another type. So you can convert an AVI DV file to a Quicktime DV file that should work on Final Cut. I’d email them for more specific info since I’m not 100% sure if there are any limitations.

As for SDI capture, if you have a Blackmagic Design Decklink in a PC you can use the Decklink Capture Utility to grab uncompressed Quicktime files. These will work fine on Final Cut Pro provided you have the Blackmagic codec installed.

    Thanks for the responses!

Why I’m wanting to do this is working with a team that is half on FCP and half on Premiere Pro.
