Video card for G4/Motion
Posted by Hal Beery on March 5, 2006 at 11:19 pmWhat’s the best recommendation for video card on a G4 dp1.25 fw800 desktop for best MOTION performance. Everytime I talk to an apple rep, I get different info.
tnx

March 6, 2006 at 3:57 pmThere are weekly threads on this in the Motion forum. Why not hop over there & search back over the last 2 months? Bear in mind that if you’re only using SD, you don’t need the biggest, baddest, most expensive card.

March 6, 2006 at 4:45 pmI am using the ATI Radeon 9800 Mac Edition with 128 GB Vram for running Motion on my Quicksilver 2002 dual 1.0 Ghz G4. I understand that there are now a couple of more choices. One might be that the 9800 Pro now has 256 MB Vram and the other is the 9600 Pro which is 256 MB Vram for an AGP 4x slot MAC.

March 6, 2006 at 11:40 pmGood feedback. I realise that I need a G-5 for more rubber on the road but for now, I’m paying the rent with the ol G4 and I’m hoping I can soup it up enuf to learn Motion basics to increase graphics productivity.
Thanks.

Hi,
You could probably get at least $1k on Ebay if you do a nice add:
https://search-completed.ebay.com/dual-g4-1-25_W0QQcatrefZC6QQcoactionZcompareQQcoentrypageZsearchQQcopagenumZ1QQfisZ2QQfposZ94930QQfromZR10QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQfstypeZ1QQftrtZ1QQftrvZ1QQsacatZQ2d1QQsadisZ200QQsargnZQ2d1QQsaslcZ2QQsatitleZdualQ20g4Q201Q2e25QQsbrftogZ1QQsoZShowQ20ItemsQQsofocusZsoIf you watch for deals on G5’s you can probably pay under $1,700 for a Dual 2.0 like this for example:
https://dealmac.com/deals/Apple-Power-Mac-G5-2-GHz-Dual-w-MS-Office-mac-2004-for-1-600/110437.htmlThe G5 will proably come with a better card than your G4 so it won’t cost a lot more than upgrading your card and you will recapture most or all of the difference in resale value.
Best Wishes,
Mitch
