    Hi guys,
I’ve noticed that while inputting into FCP 4.5 from my GL1 that I’m getting a slight border on the r & l sides of black. This becomes a problem especially when I wanted to key up a slug bar or have text scroll across the screen as then you can tell my picture is smaller than the canvas…is this a problem from when I input my footage? or what?

    thanks!

[MonkeyBoy] “is this a problem from when I input my footage? or what?”

No, it’s a problem from when Cannon built your camcorder! IOW, those black lines are pixels on your camcorder that don’t record any picture on them. A lot of consumer/”pro”-sumer cameras have those lines. Most people don’t notice these things, though, because they’re in the ‘overscan’ area that’s typically cut off on most TV screens.

so is there an input setting that can adjust for this in FCP?

Re-read my post above. This has nothing to do with FCP- it’s the way your camera was made. Those 2 black bars are a part of how it records the image, which is not uncommon for this class of cameras. They will not be seen on most TVs because they’re in the overscan area that typically gets cut off of most TVs. This is probably why you didn’t notice them before.

I understand it is a Canon issue BUT my question was if there was a way to correct this when inputting to FCP – ie a frame size adjustment. Or do I have to manually stretch each frame?

I understand that this wouldn’t be a problem if I was using a TV for my main viewing source, but if I am using a projector unit, this empty area gets exposed…
