  • Importing Targa Sequence as a single unit?

Posted by Marcpost on March 1, 2006 at 9:34 pm

We have just installed a Final Cut 5 system after years of working in Smoke* and are having trouble importing a Targa sequence from 3D Studio Max into Final Cut. It imports them as single files with a default length of 10 seconds each. It would take much too long to fix each one and then drop them on the timeline. We would like to avoid turning them into a Quicktime if possible, even though Quicktime recognizes them as a single unit. Is there an easy solution?

    Marc,
Final Cut won’t import them as a single file like After Effects and Quicktime – however…
Go to File – User Preferences and select the Editing tab. Change the Still/Freeze Duration to 1 frame (00:00:00:01). Drag the folder that has the Targa Sequence into a bin then drag that whole folder into a sequence. Depending on how long your targa sequence is, you still may want to make a movie from it to avoid possible dropped frames on playback.

Import the image sequence into Quicktime Pro. Export as a Quicktime movie in the codec you are working in. Import that movie in FCP.

This is one reason why a Quicktime Pro license is included with FCP.

Drag the image sequence onto the canvas in Motion.
    Hit save
Drag the icon off the top of the bar & drop into FCP using Apple Tab

Thats the quickest way I’ve found of doing it 🙂
