Working on a laptop.
Posted by Scott Davis on February 24, 2006 at 5:08 pmI am starting a freelance gig where I will be working on a laptop. All I know about the laptop is that it is a G4 1.25Ghz. I’ve always worked on desktops and had a few questions.
1-How do you hook up a regular sized monitor? Also, can you run a dual monitor set up with a laptop ?
2-How do you hook up a keyboard?
3-Are there anyconsiderations I should take into account, or is it like using a little desktop?Bryce Whiteside replied 20 years, 2 months ago 5 Members · 9 Replies -

February 24, 2006 at 5:23 pm1- Plug it right in to the monitor port. Yes.
2- Get a Bluetooth keyboard for the easiest setup
3- No, yes, maybe. It all depends on what kind of stuff you’ll be doing on it. Serious editing, get plenty of RAM and good speakers, for example.

February 24, 2006 at 5:52 pmcan you post more about what kind of setup you are going to need? Are you going dv firewire? Beta? DigiBeta? DV50? Will you need uncompressed capability? What kind of media drives do you have?

February 24, 2006 at 5:53 pmThanks guys. I’m not sure what format we will be working with. I think DV; so we should be ok. How does a setup like this handle DVCPRO HD ?

February 24, 2006 at 5:54 pmI do it whenever I’m on the road. You’ll need an external firewire drive for media storage. I have one that I put together using an enclosure built by firewiredepot.com and a Hitachi Travelstar 7200 rpm drive. It’s small and fits in my computer bag, and it’s bus powered. I use a small mouse, and the built-in keyboard is just fine for me. I use i-Pod headphones for monitoring. The idea for me is to fit everything I need into my one computer bag. I can work anywhere with this set-up.

February 24, 2006 at 6:00 pmJeremy, From what I understand all media will be formated to DV (original was DV, DVCPRO HD, and P2) and put onto a LaCie d2 extrem 500G FW800 drive. FCP Studio 5.04/OS 10.4.4. 1 Ghz RAM. External keyboard, mouse, 23 inch cinema display.

February 24, 2006 at 6:04 pmIf you can find that out, I’ll tell you what you need. There’ll be a big differnce between dv, and anything uncompressed. You’ll need to separate your firewire dv source from your firewire media drives for starters, and I wouldn’t do anything less than a FW800 drive, even for DV, but overkill is my second middle name when it comes to setting up the proper edit gear. I always like to have headroom.

February 24, 2006 at 6:08 pmHmm, so you’ll have two perhaps three different media formats. DV, HD, and P2 (which could be dv, dv50, or dvcpro hd). How do you plan on combining all of these materials in the same timeline? You have a couple of options. You better put a prepro test day or two in your budget, and don’t forget deck rentals and such.
