dv start stop detect help
Is there anyway to change the subclips created from dv start stop detect into their own little files instead of just being refrences to the huge chunk of video?

Check out pages 273-275 in the on-board manual. Help>Final Cut Pro Manual if you’re using FCP5.
If using another version, search for “DV start/stop” (no quotes) and you should get to the right page.
The short version is you can select all the markers in the long capture and go to Modify>Make Subclip.
I highly suggest you read that section of the manual, however. This is prone to user errors that can bite you in the tushie.

when i do that it just creates subclips, which are refrences to the origional huge media file. I want to break up the actual media file into smaller segments so I can move the exact clips i want into after effects.

You need to use media manager!. I suggest you read chapters 7 & 8 of Volume IV in FCP 5 manual. It will explain how to do it. Make sure you read it carefully so you dont inadvertantly delete any of your file you will actually need.

Ohhh, that’s a whole ‘nother can of worms.
The only way I know of to really do that is to set in and out points around the segment you want and export it out not recompressed as a separate movie file.
Then you open that up in AE and work away.
