multiple storage questions…
1 Is it correct that with mac osx I will not need to reformat a brand new 500g drive in order to utilize the whole 500Gs?
2 Has anyone had any experience with using LACIE’s software RAID that they include with their HDs? if so were you using tiger?
3 Since I normally only work on very short projects I don’t normally backup my media… I just back up render and project files… since I can always recapture… is this a bad idea/practice?

1) You should probably always format a drive you just got since you can’t be totally sure what format it is formatted in. Even if it SAYS it’s Mac formatted, should you trust that? It’s kind of like washing clothes you just bought at the mall. Who knows where they’ve been?
2) Nope. I’ve used OS X’s disc utility for making firewire RAIDs with no problems.
3) It just comes down to time. If you have to re-capture everything will you have time to do so? My anwer is “yes” so I do exactly the same thing as you. Nothing wrong with that just so long as you’re prepared to re-capture someday. (I have before and it worked out just fine.)

You want to start out with a clean drive formatted by your own system. Just use Apple’s Disk Utility to Erase the drive.
