Should my G5 with 4GBRAM take 10 minutes to render a text scroll that is only 4 short paragraphs? I’m wondering what is the best way to speed things up. Does adding more RAM have a significant effect?

There’s not much you can do to speed up rendering besides getting a faster computer.

Scrolling text has ALWAYS been a real pain, in my experience. I haven’t done it lately, so I don’t know how long it should take a G5, but I remember way back on my G3 system that rendering scrolling text always took WAY longer than any other kind of render. Even though everything’s faster now I’d assume that it’s still proportionally slower than anything else you could be rendering..

If you have After Effects and Photoshop, create your text in photoshop and animate the scroll in After Effects. The render will be LIGHTINIG fast. In terms of speeding up your render – unfortunately rendering doesn’t have much to do with RAM, but is rather a processor heavy operation. So, as Jeff mentioned, you’d have to get a faster computer like a dual or a quad G5.

What’s your drive situation? Having a fast RAID will be faster than a firewire drive.
