  Monitoring DVCPRO HD

  Hi All.

  I’ve been asked to look into upgrading my FCP suite so that it can edit DVCPRO HD shot on Panasonics new P2 camera.
  I know that FCP can work with DVCPRO HD but I have a couple of questions about workflow.

  Firstly, how do I ingest the MXF files from the P2 cards. From other posts, I gather that the MXF is just a DVCPRO HD wrapper but how do I ‘unwrap’ it to import it into FCP?

  Second, I am currently working with 1x 250Gig internal SATA drive, 1x 250Gig Lacie FW800 drive and a 250Gig FW400 drive. Will I be able to sustain the DVCPRO HD data rate over either the FW800 or the SATA drive or should I look at buying a sata raid or even a fibre channel solution?

  And finally, how can I view the DVCPRO HD signal on a client monitor? I know Blackmagic and AJA have a HD monitoring solution, but do how do they deal with the DVCPRO HD codec?

  First off, visit the COW P2 forum and do a lot of reading. This is discussed heavily there:

  Now…to import P2 footage you need to be running FCP 5.0.3 and Quicktime 7.0.3, minimum. First, copy the footage off the P2 card onto a hard drive, or get it to mount on the desktop. Then in FCP go to FILE>IMPORT>Panasonic P2. You will get an import window. Click on the “+” and navigate to the CONTENTS folder…click OK. YOu will now see all the clips in the window. Hit IMPORT ALL.

  For DVCPRO HD you need to have them stored on a Firewire 800 drive, secondary internal SATA, or External SATA Raid (Fibrechannel, SCSI 2 also). Firewire 400 will not cut it. I highly recommend the G-Raids for this.

  For monitoring either route firewire thru the AJ-1200HD deck, then to a monitor, or get an HD Card like the Decklink HD and an HD monitor (You need an HD monitor for this option) or a Kona 2 (this card downconverts to SD so that it is viewable on an SD monitor, but either way, the monitor needs SDI inputs) or Kona LH (This has component outputs).
