  • Varicam – FrameRateConversion – PAL question – shane?

    Hi!

I have the opportunity to play around with some Varicam footage and a 1200 with the FireWire card installed, but before I wet my hands i wonder how to capture the footage.

It was shot in 25p and I can either capture via Firewire or HD-SDI

I have read that you can make your own DVCPRO HD 720/1080 25p sequnce presets to accomodate PAL footage,

    Right/Wrong?

If right: I guess I have the “lack of 25p” problem out of my head

The next problem is hof the pulldown will be done. Do I need the Pana “blackbox” -;) to do this, or can it be done directly on import to FCP?

Or can I use the framerateconcerter as described by Shane?

OK. This is a first so if my questions are dumb, beat me with a big stick!

I don’t work with PAL footage, so I have yet to investigate any of this. But looking at the EASY SETUPs I notice the only PAL setting is 1080i50. No 720P support for 25P. So you can’t even capture it, much less convert it. The converter I talked about is meant to slow footage shot at 60fps to 24fps.

Why is there no PAL 720P support for this camera? That shuts out a HUGE market.

They do sell a “black box” universal converter (about 25.000$)and you can either capture through HD-SDI to 1080i50 or capture at 60 fps and manually remove the unwanted frames … -;)) (Basically jokin’ on this one)

But I wondered wether there were any native options…

And yes: This is a problem in PAL-land…

But the camera is just sooo beautifull.

Supposedly FCP is supposed to get some p25 capture preset in v6.

But to anyone familiar with cinematools: Is it programmeable to different pulldownpatterns?

    Just pondering here -;)

Or maybe some Automator script with the Black Magic “View quicktime files as single frames” software.

Can you shot and work with footage at 720p24, finish your project, then convert to PAL for your final delivery? Output to DVCPRO HD and have that converted to a PAL D5 or HDCAM (whatever your delivery specs are).

That is the only way I can think of how to do it.

Yes, I guess this is the way to go.

Just now I’m struggeling with a shoot we did with a (very friendly and helpfull) Pana-rep.

Wouldn’t the p50 from decklink work?

Yes, you can capture uncompressed 8-bit HD with the decklink card, I see that option. It wil eat away at your drive space though. And you will need a SATA or Fibrechannel Raid.
