Wondering about Rendering
I am trying to understand the logic in the work flow of FCP. I have Dual Quad, 10.4, FCP 5.0.3, 4.5GB Ram, 2TB SATA (8 drives)and am blown away by the way it handles multiple layers of video tracks via the dynamic function (both DV & SD 8 bit uncompressed).
What confuses me is why, when you introduce a Live Type or even an internally generated title it starts to require rendering.
I can have a huge pict file moving all over the screen in real time, but add an effect and your rendering. Yet if you drag the same files into Motion everything plays back in real time. I sometimes use the option P to play thing back in FCP but even that is usually at half speed. (I was assuming the opt P would be similar to RAM preview in AE but it doesn

Do you have the RT set to safe or to unlimited?

warning: i;m no expert, so apologies if this is all just made-up nonsense and misinformation!
motion is a much newer app than FCP.
it’s been written in a different way to get it;s “oomph” from different part of the computer.
i think it gets more power from the graphics processor than FCP dies.i think FCP is drawing on that now more than it used to,
and i imagine it will draw more on that in the future,
as FCP gets re-written.nick

I’ve wondered about this myself. I have a Quad (with the basic stock graphics card, running 10.4.4, FCP 5.04, and QT 7.04) and completed a project with multiple layers, motion effects, etc., and it worked fine. Now I’m working on one that has heavy titling going on (subtitles using the text generator) and after 15 minutes of translations on the timeline, it needs to render. I start in safe RT, then move into unlimited RT with dynamics, where playback gets slow and choppy, eventual I need to just start a new sequence to continue. Nothing else going on except for the titles. To edit, I’ve actually exported the sequences as QT movies, then reimported them.
