I just purchased the new Canon HDV camera. I am shooting tomorrow and looking for the best recommendations to shoot and digitize into the FCP5 system. 60i, 30P or 24P. Music video style shoot. Want the best possible image.
Digitizing into a KONA 2 using HD SDI out of camera. Drives are fast enough for true HD.

    HELP!

    Cheers,
    JJ

First off, if you shoot to tape with the Canon, then you won’t get true HD. That shoots HDV, which is a slightly higher compression that DV (14GB per hour as opposed to 12.5GB for DV) If you shoot with the Canon, and record the signal directly from the camera to a computer via a capture card, you will get a better picture. Or from the camera to an HDCAM ot D5 deck on location…but once you go to tape, you are in HDV land and cannot really improve the image.

BUT…it is always best to capture HDV in a format other than its native format, like DVCPRO HD. This allows for I Frame editing, and give your true frames and not Groups of Pictures (GOP).

Shoot tests first….always shoot tests and try to capture the various formats so you know what you can and cannot do. If you want to shoot 24F, then try and see if FCP will capture it. I’m not sure it will.

The canon does not shoot true 24p. If you are indeed capturing straight from the HD-SDI out of the camera on set, then this will be the “best possible image”. The frame rate you choose to shoot at will depend on the look you are going for and the delivery format of the video. As Shane suggests do a few test shots to see what looks best and what works best with FCP.

[Shane Ross] “BUT…it is always best to capture HDV in a format other than its native format, like DVCPRO HD.”

Shane – is it as simple as using the DVCPRO HD easy setup preset in FCP5? I’m just wondering what the pros/cons would be to doing it this way versus using the HDV easy setup preset.

    Thanks,

    PK

Well, you’ll need a capture card as well. You cannot capture HDV as DVCPRO HD via firwire.

Benefit? Working with i Frames, having the ability to output without re-encoding to HDV..stuff like that.
