exporting movies
I am editing 8 bit uncompressed video which needs to be condensed onto a dvd for viewing purposes. The project will be about 10 mins long and the viewing copy needs to be able to be played off a CD/DVD full screen on the average laptop. Is compressor my best option or should I export from Quicktime? Speed is essential as the client wants to leave approx 20 mins after the edit is finished with her viewing copy. Any thoughts would be gratefully received.

Getting a 10 minute FCP piece out to a finished DVD in 20 minutes is inside the Mac is going to be tight.
A fast way to make this happen is to play the project from FCP into a “set-top” (stand-alone”) DVD Recorder.
They work essentially in real-time (but still require a “Finalize” step, which can take several minutes).
One way to make this process much faster is to burn to a DVD-RW which has been pre-formatted so as to be able to play on standard DVD players after just the basic “record” process is completed.
Some DVD recorders can do this. -
You are also talking about 2 different compressions. MPEG-2 for the DVD creation and another format, such as Windows Media or MPEG-1 for playing on a “CD”.
I agree, 20 minutes will be tight. I also have my PC system set up for comrpessions. If you have the same you could do the DVD on your MAC and the CD on you PC. That would speed things up a bit.

Compressor is your best bet as you need to encode an mpeg2 file to burn to DVD. You can do that prior to the viewing and give that copy to your client. However if after the viewing the client wants changes to the cut and you do them on the spot, then the only way to give her an updated copy within 20 minutes is to lay off to tape or, as suggested, to a set top DVD recorder. The encoding and burning process for a 10 minute uncompressed sequence will be a couple of hours at best on a laptop.
