I have read the manual and got the tracking to work but when I select animate ->track motion my target layer disapears in the compositon window.

What am I doing wrong? I have set the motion source and the motion target. What do I need to do to see my motion target?

You track in the layer window, not the composition. Therefore you never see your target, only the layer the tracker works on.

sometimes the tracked layer and the target layer become offset, depending on what you have done with your animations already. i find that once i have applied the position/rotation keyframes from the tracked layer my target shifts, so all i do is go to the position keyframes of the target layer, make sure i am on a keyframe, select all keyframes (just click on the POSITION title and they all get selected) then move your layer in the comp window to where you need it…
