  Varicam Settings on Import

  I’m trying to digitize some footage show with the Panasonic Varicam into FCP via Kona2 card.

  problem:
  when I set my in and out points and digitize it fires away (works fine)

  when it “Finishes” the digitizing only half of the tape is there…it keeps stopping in ths same spot on the tape…
  (No timecode breaks)…
  Example
  IN POINT 0:00:03:15 OUT POINT: 0:35:00:00….
  when finished the outpoint changes to 0:16:00:00…

  the weird thing is that at 0:16:00:00 in the digitized file is actually 0:07:00:00 on the tape???

  (Does this make sense to anyone???)

  Do you mean “slow motion” as in you’re trying to digitize the footage in slow motion into FCP?

  Then yes, what you’re seeing is normal. When you bring in the footage at an off frame rate to slow mo it during capture, you’ll end up capturing about half of what you expected to capture. FCP’s log and capture window shows the footage coming in normally and even shows you what you think is the entire clip, but then when you play it back, there’s only about half of the footage, becasue it’s been slow mo’d by your Capture setting.

  I’m sorry for the confusion…the “slo-mo” was actually captured in the camera at the shoot…not during digitizing….

  That would effect the way it is digitized?? would it?

  No actually it’s not captured in slo-mo, it’s the frame rate you bring the clips in at which determines the slo-mo. The camera always records in 60fps, but it can be set to shoot in varible frame rates which FCP can read on the way in.

  If you’re capturing true 60fps material to 24fps during Capture, then you’re slow mo’ing the footage on the way in and yes, you will capture what appears to be half of what you want when digitizing.

  Best thing to do is simply capture everything at 60 during digitizing, then use the FRC tool to adjust after. This way your material digitizes correctly and you can get the slow mo after the fact.
