  • FCP Hangs, Display freezes.

I have a G4, dual 1.25, 1.5 gigs of RAM. I’m running FCP 5.04, Tiger 10.4.4, and QT 7.04. (I recently downloaded these new updates in hopes of solving this issue, but no luck)

Here’s the deal Often when I’m playing from the timeline and I stop play, fcp will hang and I’ll get the beachball. If I wait long enough the beachball will go away, but then it will only play a second or two at a time before the drives hang and I get the message about dropped frames. I usually have to shut down fcp and re-open it to edit again. This is happening a lot lately, like every 5 minutes. I’m using 2 G-Raid 500’s and they’re fairly full but there’s still 60 gigs of free space on each. The other issue is that by Aurora RT card keeps cutting off it’s ntsc output. I either refresh A/V devices or toggle the video output off and on again to get it back. I understand that there’s some issues with Igniter and Tiger that will probably always be there. Sometimes though the viewer in my canvas window freezes as well, then it’s back to restarting fcp. Once in awhile fcp crashes completely.

I’ve done all the normal maintenence procedures that I know of. Resoring permissions, trashing the fcp preferences, etc. but no luck.

Any suggestions would be really appreciate. This is getting pretty bad.

With all this updating, I’d be sure that you have the current drivers for your Aurora card. Also check the initialization of the drves and make sure they are HFS+.

Thanks for the suggestions, both of those check out okay. Two other things that I’ve discovered: If I turn off the warning about dropped frames, then I can keep working except that the display freezes both NTSC and in the timeline. If I close and reopen the sequence then things work again.

I think your drives are too full & too slow. What kind of video are you working with? If you’re working with uncompressed, then you’re pushing the limit by using Firewire 800 drives. Also, the drives are around 85~90% full.
