Export from FCP to Flash…fastest method?
Posted by Tim Baker on January 20, 2006 at 5:25 pmHey all,
I need to get some videos…some that I will be editing on-site with tight deadlines…to flash files to get straight to the web.
What is the most cost effective and time efficient method coming out of FCP HD? Can it be exported directly as a web ready Flash file or will I need to use some other software to re-encode after export from FCP (and if so…what settings should I use to export from FCP to then re-encode?
Thanks all.
You can reply direct to ti*@**********vp.com so I can get responses quicker…thanks all.

January 20, 2006 at 9:56 pmWe’re starting to see this question almost daily so scroll down a page ro two and you should find several answers. The easiest quickest route is to export it as a reference movie, import the reference movie into Flash, and export out of Flash. Some applications like Sorenson Squeeze and Cleaner are equipped with the Flash codec but Quicktime is not one of them yet.
You’re going to find that most Flash people do not understand video which is all pixels. Most video people do not understand Flash which can be pixels or vectors. Video is not vectors.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

January 20, 2006 at 11:12 pmYeah…I did a search before posting this and did not find anything from the past two months.
So I should buy Flash itself and then I can do the conversion from within it? Does Compressor not do any Flash codecs?
Thanks,

January 20, 2006 at 11:42 pmThis might be more work for you, I don’t know. I export as an .avi that a windows machine can read, and import it into a program called “Swish Video”. Program costs $50 bucks, and quite good for doing flash video. If you can live with the additional steps, it’s quite good, and frees up my FCP machine to compress into other formats at the same time, or just keep working. It’s relatively quick to compress too. Probably not an ideal solution, but cheap, and works well for me, just wish Swish would do mac versions. Swishzone dot com has it available for a trial…

January 21, 2006 at 12:31 amYeah…without a Mac version…it really wont work for me…especially for the onsite stuff I am getting ready to do.
Don’t want to make my Mac mad by hauling in a PC to set next to her…hehehehehe!!!
Does anyone know a similar software that is for the Mac? Or how would the swish do on a PC laptop? I could take my PC laptop to the onsite gig, but it is more of a workflow than I would like.
Thanks,

January 21, 2006 at 12:38 amI ran swish video on a 1ghz Toshiba laptop PIII, took about 8 minutes to turn a 30 second DV based .avi using a daul pass vbr setting. 44 minutes to do a 2:30 under similar settings. I like swish, easier to use than flash, and decent options. That and Cool Edit/Audition are the 2 reasons I still own a PC… Which is why my specs are so old.

January 21, 2006 at 2:38 amI use Sorenson Squeeze. You can get a version just for Flash. It’s a lot less expensive than the entire Flash app and it’s much better than Swish. Allow time to play with the program. It has some very good presets, but it takes a while to perfect your encodes. But once you do, they look great. Be aware that Flash 8 now has an excellent encoder that allows you to create a flv with an alpha channel. I believe this will be a part of the next Squeeze update. Also, I think I just read that the new AfterFX 7 can export Flash with alpha channel.
Check out the Flash forum for more information.

January 22, 2006 at 3:09 amCleaner 6.5 upgrade is $125 and has a decent Flash Video exporter. You can batch and use cleaner for all that other batching stuff you might do. Works for me…has a decent interface (don’t like Squeeze or Compressor’s interface) was familiar to me, and basically added the Flash exporter to the new version.
